Tipperary 1-11

Galway have booked their place in the Electric Ireland Minor A semi-final following a 2-16 to 1-11 victory over Tipperary in blustery conditions in Carnmore on Sunday afternoon. A strong second-half display, along with two crucial goals from Mary Bridgid Cosgrove either side of half-time, proved decisive.

Emma Barrett and Jessie Shanahan exchanged early points before Barrett and Lauren Morgan edged Galway ahead by the fourth minute. Galway created several goal chances in the opening ten minutes but were unable to convert. Points from Allie Barrett and a free from Abbie Morgan levelled the sides by the 12th minute.

Tipperary struck for a goal a minute later when Morgan’s long delivery from a free bounced awkwardly off the surface and into the Galway net, giving the visitors a three-point lead midway through the half. Galway responded well, with a Cosgrove free and points from play by Barrett and Aoife Scarry restoring momentum. Shanahan and Morgan (free) nudged Tipperary back in front by the 23rd minute.

Barrett and Nessa Dawn traded scores before the break, but Galway finished the half strongly. In the 30th minute, Cosgrove fielded a puck-out in midfield, surged through the Tipperary defence, and fired to the net to give Galway a 1-7 to 1-6 lead at half-time.

Galway carried that momentum into the second half. Barrett extended the lead from the restart before Cosgrove struck for her second goal, winning possession from the puck-out and finishing clinically. Eve Kenny added her first point in the 35th minute to leave Galway 2-9 to 1-6 ahead.

Tipperary responded with two frees from Morgan and a point from Sarah Jane Ormond to cut the deficit to three by the 42nd minute. Cosgrove and Morgan exchanged scores, but Galway took control in the closing stages, hitting six unanswered points in the final quarter. Clodagh Burke, Kenny Barrett, Leah Forde, Amy Kenny and Cosgrove (free) all contributed during a dominant spell.

Morgan added a late 45 for Tipperary, but it proved only a consolation as Galway ran out convincing 2-16 to 1-11 winners.

Galway will now face Tipperary again in two weeks’ time in Mallow in the semi-final, where they will look to build on this performance as the championship enters its knockout stages.
