Match Report
A powerful second-half display from Galway Minor Camogie team ensured they maintained their unbeaten run in the Electric Ireland Minor A Championship with a hard-fought victory over Cork Minor Camogie team in blustery conditions at Carnmore on Sunday.
Galway found scores difficult to come by in the opening half, registering just a single major late in the period. Despite carving out two early goal chances inside the first five minutes, they were unable to convert. Cork opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Bláithín Cunniffe, and points from Léa Meillouin (0-2), Clara Murphy, Erin Healy and Lexi Manley saw the visitors surge into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead after 16 minutes.
Cork continued to apply pressure on Galway’s puckouts, with Murphy and Manley extending their advantage. Galway’s defence dug deep to stem the tide, holding Cork scoreless for a ten-minute spell. However, quickfire points from Cliona Harte and Leah Hanningan on 28 minutes stretched Cork’s lead to ten.
Galway were handed a crucial boost just before the interval when Amy Kenny broke through the defence and rattled the net in the 31st minute. Murphy responded immediately with a point from play, leaving Cork 0-11 to 1-0 ahead at the break.
Knowing a significant response was required, Galway emerged with renewed intensity. Emma Barrett led by example, firing over two points inside the opening minute of the second half. Sineád Feeney followed with an excellent 65-metre free, and Mary Brigid Cosgrove added another placed ball to narrow the deficit to four by the 34th minute.
Although Meillouin struck for Cork’s only goal of the game to restore a seven-point cushion, Galway refused to relent. Substitute Katelyn Walsh sparked the revival with a 47th-minute point, and Cosgrove soon added another. A cleverly worked line ball created the opportunity for Cosgrove to blast to the net, dramatically shifting momentum.
Cosgrove proved pivotal in the closing stages, adding three further frees and a point from play. Barrett capped the comeback with a decisive goal on 60 minutes. A late free from Manley in injury time was mere consolation as Galway secured a 3-10 to 1-11 victory.
Next up for Galway is an away trip to Kilkenny on Sunday, 15 March, where they will look to carry the second-half fight and determination into their clash with Kilkenny Minor Camogie team and remain the only unbeaten side in the competition.
