Match Report

Galway recorded their first victory in the Centra Camogie League on Saturday when they overcame Tipperary in The Ragg. The venue is known as a fortress for the home side and Galway had not recorded a win there since 2019. However, with their league hopes hanging in the balance and the threat of relegation looming, a victory was essential.

It was the hosts who started the brighter, opening the scoring through Mary Burke. Carrie Dolan responded with a pointed free in the third minute to bring the sides level. Tipperary then enjoyed a strong spell, scoring five unanswered points through Caoimhe Stakelum, Eimear McGrath (0-2f), Caoimhe McCarthy and Grace O’Brien.

The 2025 Player of the Year Aoife Donohue provided Galway with a much-needed lifeline on the 16th minute when she lobbed Áine Slattery to the net. Dolan and Sarah Healy followed up with a point each from placed balls to level the game by the 20th minute. McGrath added two further points, one from a free, either side of a Niamh McPeake score to leave Tipperary leading by a single point at the break.

Galway emerged rejuvenated for the second half and quickly hit four unanswered points through Shannon Corcoran (0-2), Niamh Niland, Carrie Dolan from a placed ball, and Niamh Mallon to give Galway the lead for the first time in the game. McGrath (free) and Clodagh McIntyre responded for Tipperary to leave just two points between the sides by the 40th minute.

Dolan edged Galway further ahead a minute later with another placed ball, leaving the score at Galway 1-10 to Tipperary 0-10. A ten-minute spell followed where scores were hard to come by as both defences tightened their grip on the game. McIntyre and Corcoran exchanged points on the 52nd minute.

Galway captain Dolan led by example in the closing stages, striking two important points either side of a Stakelum score to ensure Galway finished four points clear, with the final score reading Galway 1-13 to Tipperary 0-12.

After two defeats in their opening games, this victory was a welcome boost for Galway. They will hope the result sparks momentum as they face a long trip to Antrim next weekend. The game cannot be taken lightly, with Antrim having defeated Cork in the second round of the league. Galway manager Cathal Murray will be hoping his side can make it two wins in a row and keep their league hopes alive.
