The Galway Senior Camogie team will begin their quest to capture the O’Duffy cup when they kick off their Glen Dimplex All Ireland Senior Championship against old rivals Cork in Kenny Park Athenry on Saturday.
Galway and Cork have had some very exciting and interesting contests over the past few years but Galway’s record against Cork at Senior exceptional. Galway and Cork have met four times in the championship since 2019 with Galway coming out on top on all four occasions. The sides also met each other twice this year with Galway coming out on top on both occasions. The Galway side are without some experienced players such as Heather Cooney and Niamh Kilkenny but they are lucky to have players such as Orlaith and Siobhán McGrath and 2019 and 2021 All Ireland winning captain, Sarah Dervan coming back into the panel.
Cork were one of the top sides in the Littlewoods Ireland Division 1A Championship. They were unlucky to lose out to Galway in the last round robin game and in the league final. Cork like Galway have some well experienced players like Hannah Looney, Aisling Thompson, Katrina Mackey and Orla Cronin to come back into their starting team.
Galway will have tough tests against Clare and Derry coming up in the Championship too. Both games are away for the Galway side. Winning your home games is vital in the championship and with only the one home game for Galway it is crucial that they get their campaign off to a winning start against Cork on Saturday. It will be a titanic battle on Saturday between the two sides. There has only been a couple of points separating the sides this year and therefore it will be all to play for on Saturday.
