Galway suffered their first defeat of the Electric Ireland Minor A Camogie Championship on Sunday, losing by the narrowest of margins to Kilkenny at Dunmore Training Grounds.
Galway entered the contest as the only unbeaten side in the competition but were well aware of the challenge posed by Kilkenny, the 2025 All-Ireland Minor Champions, many of whose players were part of the Loretto side that recently captured the Post Primary Schools Senior A title.
Scores proved difficult to come by throughout the contest as blustery conditions and strong defensive displays from both sides limited scoring opportunities. Kilkenny started the brighter, opening the scoring through Hollie Ryan before Amy O’Shea added another point to give the hosts an early advantage.
Mary Brigid Cosgrove got Galway on the scoreboard in the 10th minute with a free, and Leah Forde levelled matters two minutes later with Galway’s first point from play. O’Shea and Lauren Morgan then exchanged scores midway through the half.
Kilkenny regained momentum as O’Shea continued to influence proceedings and, on the 24th minute, lobbed a long ball in on top of the Galway goal, with the ball ending up in the back of the Galway net. Cosgrove responded with another free, but Kilkenny finished the half strongly with a Kennedy free and a point from Emily Phelan to lead 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval.
The second half proved a physical battle, with long stretches where neither side could add to the scoreboard. Shauna Mahony extended Kilkenny’s lead to five points in the 34th minute, but Galway responded quickly when Amy Kenny found the net just two minutes later to bring the Tribeswomen right back into contention.
Ona Kennedy, reliable as ever from placed balls, converted two further frees to restore a three-point cushion for Kilkenny with ten minutes remaining. Galway pushed hard in the closing stages, with joint captain Emma Barrett and Cosgrove, from another free, reducing the deficit, but it proved just short as Kilkenny held on for a one-point victory.
While Galway will be disappointed to lose their unbeaten record, they will take valuable lessons from the contest as they prepare for the final round of group games. Their attention now turns to a meeting with Tipperary in two weeks’ time.
