The Galway U23 team suffered their second defeat in the U23A Championship as they lost out to Tipperary in the Ragg on Sunday. Galway were without some key players on the day but could have taken the game on the day through missed opportunities that they had.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring inside the opening minute with a point from Kerri O’Driscoll. Danielle Ryan and Eva O’Dwyer hit back for the hosts either side of a Katie Gilchrist point to leave the sides level by the 6th minute. Galway had a penalty shot but it was saved by Molly O’Dwyer in the Tipperary net. A Gilchrist free and a point from O’Driscoll gave Galway a two point lead by the 12th minute. Ryan and Gilchrist, through s free swapped scores by the midway point of the half. Tipperary hit three unanswered points through a Ryan free, Niamh Cunneen and Ciara Shelly gave Tipperary the lead by the 21st minute. Emily Lawless edged Galway brough the sides level again but it was Tipperary who finished the half off the strongest with points from O’Dwyer and Grace Maloney and two quickfire goals just before the break from Niamh Cunneen and Maeve Cunneen to leave Tipperary 2-8 to 0-6 ahead at the break.
Tipperary continued to extend their lead at the start of the second half with points through Ryan and Maeve Cunneen. Two Leah O’Halloran points brought the deficit back to to eight. O’Dwyer and Niamh Cunneen pointed either side of a Gilchrist free to extend their lead to eight. O’Driscoll gave Galway a life line on the 45th minute with she found the back of the net for Galway to leave six between the sides. Two Katie Lawless frees helped in reducing the deficit to four for the tribeswmen. Galway had another goal chance on he 48th minute but it was well saved by O’Dwyer in the Tipperary net. Ryan and Maeve Cunneen added scores for Tipperary either side of a Lawless free by the 56th minute. Emily Lawless found the back of the net with four minutes of normal time remaining while O’Halloran slotted two more points but it wasn’t enough for Galway as Tipperary ran out one point winners on the day. Galway could have drawn the game but a missed free chance on the 58th minute meant Tipperary got the important two points for their victory.
Galway must win their final two games against Dublin and Waterford to ensure that they make the knockout stages of the championship. Galway had their chances and will be disappointed that t hey did not make It over the line but all is not lost and the Galway panel will be strengthened as they finish out the group stages of the championship.
