The Galway U16 Camogie Team booked their place in a fourth consecutive All-Ireland U16A Camogie Final after overcoming Tipperary U16 Camogie Team following extra time in Crinkill on Saturday afternoon. A strong extra-time display ultimately proved decisive in an intriguing and hard-fought contest.
Katie Brogan opened the scoring for the Tribeswomen inside the first minute, but Molly Jones responded almost immediately to get Tipperary off the mark. Lily Ivors, who was excellent from placed balls throughout, converted a 45 to edge Tipperary in front. Galway replied through Orna Duane (2) and Brogan to lead by two points by the seventh minute. Ivors added two more frees, either side of points from Della Griffin and joint captain Ciara Mullins, leaving Tipperary 0–6 to 0–4 ahead with five minutes of the half remaining. Grace Roche registered Galway’s fifth point on 27 minutes, but Ivors struck three further frees before the break to leave the sides level at 0–7 apiece.
Brogan began the second half as she had the first, pointing for Galway in the 32nd minute. Tipperary responded with four unanswered points—three frees from Ivors and one from play by Jones—to open up a three-point lead midway through the half. Galway then enjoyed a dominant five-minute spell, with Dunne and substitutes Maeve Cronin (2) and Cara Giblin all contributing points. Giblin also netted Galway’s first goal in the 48th minute, shortly after coming on, to give her side a four-point cushion entering the final ten minutes.
Tipperary rallied late, with Ivors firing home a quick goal before Maria Groome added a point to level the game heading into the final three minutes. Dunne and Ivors (free) traded late scores, leaving the sides deadlocked at 1–13 apiece at full time. Tipperary had a chance to win it from a free, but the effort drifted wide, sending the game to extra time.
Jones gave Tipperary the perfect start to extra time, blasting to the net in the opening minute. Galway responded impressively, holding Tipperary scoreless for the remainder of the half. Two frees from Roche and points from Brogan and Dunne edged Galway into a one-point lead at the interval.
Galway maintained their momentum after the restart. Another point from Dunne and a crucial goal from substitute Sarah Maher stretched their advantage to five points with five minutes remaining, sealing a deserved victory and their place in their fourth consecutive All-Ireland final.
