Tribute to Des Coen and Ann Cunningham

Today was a very special day for Galway Camogie as we remembered 2 very special people who have passed away in the last year.

We dedicated the Senior A League Trophy to the late Des Coen from Athenry Camogie Club. Des gave so much time to his club and county during his time. Des was involved at every level in Athenry camogie, from Club chairman to team manager, Des Coen gave many years’ service to Galway Camogie also. Des served as selector of Galway Intermediate and senior camogie teams.

He was Vice Chairperson of Galway Camogie board when Galway made the historic break though in winning the first All Ireland senior title in 1996 and also served in various committees at county level. He was also one of the leading camogie referees in the county.

We would like to thank the Coen family for letting us honour Des and we would like to thank the Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry for Sponsoring the cup.

Our Senior B League Cup was dedicated to our late Honourary Life President Ann Cunningham. Anne was involved in St. Thomas’ camogie club from the early eighties serving at all levels within the club and was also delegate to the Galway County Board. Anne Cunningham served on many committees in Galway Camogie Board over the years. Anne was always ready to help out at every level of the association without ever wanting the limelight and her hands on approach and carefully selected words were an inspiration to many. Ann was honoured for her service to Galway camogie with the positions of Vice President and President, before being made Honourary Life President following the passing of Frank O’Grady who had held the position for many years.

We would like to thank the Cunningham Family for letting us honour Ann and we would like to thank St Thomas’ Camogie Club for sponsoring the cup.
