Galway made it two wins from two in the Glen Dimplex All Ireland Senior Camogie championship after they overcame Offaly in Birr last Saturday. Galway who will look to up their performance again in their next game did look in control throughout the contest but Offaly, who were a much-improved outfit from their league game against Galway, didn’t let Galway have it all their own way.
It was Offaly who got off the mark the quickest when Aisling Brennan pointed a fantastic free from the 65m line. Carrie Dolan responded 2 minutes later with a free to leave the sides level. Sabina Rabbitte was denied a goal opportunity for Galway in the 7th minute when Eleanor Clendennen pulled off a great save in the Offaly goal. Both sides had missed opportunities for points through placed balls and from play in the opening 10 minutes and both sides will be disappointed that they didn’t convert some of these scores. Dolan added another free to Galway’s tally in the 11th minute. Rabbitte got on the end of the misplaced puck out, batting into the patch of Aine Keane with Keane leaving it off to Dolan to leave it Galway 0-3 Offaly 0-1 after 12 minutes. A long ball into the full forward line by Aoife Donohue found Rabbitte and she took on the Offaly defence and blasted the ball into the back of the Offaly net halfway through the half. Mairead Teehan pointed Offaly’s first score in 18 minutes when she slotted over a free. Donohue got Galway’s first score in 10 minutes when she slotted over a point while Teehan finished off the half with a free for Offaly to leave it Galway 1-4 Offaly 0-3 at half time.
Galway started the second half brightly scoring 1-4 in the opening 10 minutes. Galway were unlucky not to get a goal in the opening minute when Rabbitte dispossessed Clendennen in the Offaly goal and her shot just went fractionally wide. Rabbitte added a point in the 32nd minute while 3 minutes later, a long ball in from Niamh Hanniffy was laid onto the path of Aine Keane and Keane blasted the ball into the Offlay net for Galway’s second major of the day. Dolan (2 frees) and Keane both added points to Galway’s tally to leave it Galway 2-8 Offaly 0-3 with 20 minutes left on the clock. Teehan responded with a free in the 42nd minute for Offaly. On the 44th minute a long range free in from Brennan found Teehan. Sarah Healy struggled to deal with the ball on the AstroTurf surface and Teehan stuck the ball in the back of the Galway net and kept Offaly’s hopes alive. Galway answered the goal getting the next three scores with points coming from Dolan, Donohue and Hanniffy. Sarah Walsh picked off a great score from play for Offaly while Teehan added another free to her tally 4 minutes later. Rebecca Hennlley got the final score of the game in the 63rd minute through a free to leave it Galway 2-12 Offaly 1-6.
Galway will be delighted to get two wins under their belt, but they know there will be plenty to improve on. Like Offaly, both sides had some bad misses throughout the game and they will both have to capitalize on these opportunities as the competition progresses. Galway’s top performers on the day were Shauna Healy, Maria Cooney, Dervla Higgins, Carrie Dolan, Aine Keane and Sabina Rabbitte while Aisling Feeney, Roisin Egan, Aisling Brennan, Sarah Harding and Mairead Teehan all tried hard for Offaly. Galway have a break for the upcoming week. They are at home to Down on the 11th of June.
