The Galway Intermediate Camogie team made it 2 wins from 2 in the Glen Dimplex Intermediate Camogie Championship on a sunny Saturday in Duggan Park Ballinasloe when they were comfortable winners against Carlow. Galway were in the driving seat from the outset of the game, and they just proved too strong for Carlow.

Laura Loughnane opened the scoring for Galway in the opening 2 minutes with a well taken point from play. Eimear Byrne and Catherine Kavanagh responded with two quick points from play in the 8th and 9th minutes to give Carlow the lead. Loughnane replied with her second point of the day while Ciara Quirke replied with a point straight from the Carlow puck out. Galway hit 1-4 without reply with points from Loughnane (2), Jennifer Hughes, Cora Kenny and a well taken goal from Kenny on the 16th minute to leave it Galway 1-6 Carlow 0-3 at the halfway point of the half. Quirke responded with a 45m for Carlow on the 19th minute, but Galway responded with their 2nd major of the day a minute later through Niamh McInerny. Laura Kelly got her first score of the day 2 minutes later through a 45m free while Quirke replied with a free 30 seconds later for Carlow. Galway finished the half the strongest with points from Kelly through a free and from play, Tegan Canning (2) and Katie Gilchrist to leave it Galway 2-12 Carlow 0-5 at half time.

Galway started the strongest in the second half. McInerny and Kelly added two points from play while Eibhe Lawler replied with a point for Carlow on the 33rd minute. Galway blitzed Carlow, scoring 2-7 without reply. Kelly slotted another point on the 35th minute. 2 minutes later, McInerny turned Sarah Jayne Burke but her shot on goal was saved but Cora Kenny got on the end of the block to tap the ball back into the Carlow net. A minute later, Galway struck their 4th major of the game when Kenny hit a crossfield ball into the hand of Loughnane and Loughnane made little work of putting the ball into the back of the Carlow net. Kelly, Loughnane, Kenny (2), Canning and Gilchrist all added to their tallies to leave Galway 4-19 to 0-6 ahead with 10minutes remaining. Eleanor Tracey got Carlow’s first score in nearly 20 minutes when she slotted over a point from play. Galway finished the strongest in the final 10 minutes with points coming from Gilchrist (0-2 frees) and Grainne O’Neill while Niamh McInerny picked up her second goal of the day to leave it Galway 5-22 Carlow 0-7.

Galway will be delighted to make it two wins from two. Ciara Hickey, Lisa Casserly, Jennifer Hughes, Katie Gilchrist, Cora Kenny and Niamh McInerny were some of Galway’s top performers on the day while Ciara Quirke, Eibhe Lawler, Eimear Byrne and Katie Garry Murphy tried hard for the visitors. They will be facing a tougher challenge in their upcoming game as they face 2019 All Ireland Intermediate Champions Westmeath on Saturday.
