Match Report
The Galway Intermediate camogie team got their campaign back on track after a hard fought victory over Westmeath in Kenny Park on Saturday. Conor Dolan’s charges bounced back from a defeat to Clare in their second round game, putting them back in the mix for the knock-out stages of the competition.
It was Galway who opened the scoring with points from Aoibheann Barry and Caoimhe Kelly in the opening five minutes. Megan Dowdall brought the sides level with points from play and through a free. Ava Lynskey and Barry through a free put Galway back into the lead heading up to the midway point of the half but Dowdall, Westmeath’s top scorer on the day found the back of the Galway net on the 17th minute to give them lead for the first time in the game. Two Barry points, one through a free had Galway back in front by the 20th minute while Dowdall levelled the game a minute later.
Galway hit a purple patch just before the half time break scoring 1-3 without reply. This was key to their victory in the contest. A Barry goal on the 22nd minute followed by two frees from Barry and a point from Lynskey meant Galway went in 1-9 to 1-3 ahead heading into the half-time break. Aoibhe Joyce continued Galway’s scoring spree with a point in the opening two minutes of the second half. Westmeath looked like they were making a comeback with two Dowdall two frees either side of her second goal on the 34th minute to reduce the deficit to two. Barry was key to Galway’s victory as she kept slotting over frees throughout the half. Barry ended the scoring spree n the 42nd minute with a point from play. She followed up 4 minutes later to extend the lead for the tribeswomen. Substitute, Amelia Shaw followed up with a free for Westmeath but Barry kept the scoreboard ticking for Galway as she pointed to more points, one through a free. Shaw followed up with another free on the 51st minute but it was Galway who finished the game out the strongest with two Lynskey points and one from Barry as they ran out 1-17 to 2-7 winners on the day.
Westmeath will look back and be disappointed and will reflect back on their missed chances throughout the contest. Galway will be delighted with the work rate throughout the contest from the whole team. A win against Offaly next weekend will set up a quarter final spot for the Galway girls.
