Galway booked their place in the knockout stages of the Littlewood’s Ireland Division 2 Camogie League on Saturday when they overcame Kerry in John Mitchell’s GAA Grounds in Tralee. Kerry who had some players experienced players in the likes of Patrice Diggin and Jackie Horgan, did line out with a youthful outfit, with some girls making their debut. Galway, who also lined out with a mixture of youth and experience will be happy to see Eva Gillmore back playing after her cruciate ligament injury last year, while Alannah Kelly and Niamh McPeake were also named on the bench.
Galway started very brightly and were unlucky not to get two goals in the opening 2 minutes. Chloe Farragher’s shot was blocked on the line by the Kerry full back, Sara Murphy while a long free in from Katie Gilchrist hit the cross bar. Tara Ruttledge was on the rebound but her shot also hit the post with Murphy putting the ball out of play for a 45 and Gilchrist pointed the resulting 45m to give Galway the lead after 2 minutes. Sinead Coleman laid of a lovely hand pass to Tegan Canning in the 9th minute and Canning slotted the ball between the posts. Kerry, who did fail to score in the first half, lost one of their key forwards, Jackie Horgan, on the 10th minute due to an injury. Canning added another point to her tally on the 13th minute to leave it Galway 0-3 Kerry 0-0 coming up to the halfway point of the half. Patrice Diggin was outstanding for Kerry in their defence, coming out with ball after ball, but Kerry struggled to get the ball past the Galway half back line throughout the first half. Galway lost their full forward, Chloe Farragher, due to an injury in the 18th minute while Grainne O’Neill picked up a yellow card in the 21st minute due to a high tackle on Diggin. Tara Ruttledge got the first score in 13 minutes on the 26th minute for Galway and she added another point to her tally on the 33rd minute to leave it Galway 0-5 Kerry 0-0 at half time.
Kerry started the second half brightly. Amy O’Sullivan opened their accounts on the 33rd minute when she pointed a free and Kate Lynch added another point on the 36th minute to leave 3 between the teams. However, Kerry would fail to score for the rest of the game. It took Galway 15 minutes to register their first score of the second half when Gilchrist slotted over another free for Galway. A great stick pass from substitute Eva Gillmore found another substitute for Galway Elaine Dolphin and Dolphin blasted the ball into the back of the Kerry net. Canning got her third point of the day on the 51st minute to leave Galway in the driving seat 1-7 to 0-2 points ahead, heading into the final few minutes. Gilchrist pointed another free for Galway on the 57th minute while Canning got her fourth point of the day on the 59th minute. Gilchrist found the oncoming and unmarked Laura Loughnane with a stick pass on the 63rd minute and Loughnane stuck the ball in the back of the Kerry net to leave it Galway 2-9 Kerry 0-2.
For Galway, Tegan Canning, Katie Gilchrist, Caoimhe Reidy, Aisling Donnellan, Tara Ruttledge and Ciana Reidy all preformed well, while for Kerry Patrice Diggin, Sarah Murphy, Kate Lynch and Amy O’Sullivan tried hard. Galway will be happy to get book a spot in the knockout stages of this highly competitive Division 2 league. They will be out in 2 weeks time again and their opposition is to be confirmed.
