Galway Intermediates Bow Out of The Littlewoods Ireland Division 2 League
By Sarah Gaughran in Moneygall
The Galway Intermediate team bowed out of the Littlewoods Ireland Division 2 League on Saturday after they lost out to Cork in Moneygall. A youthful Galway side, which included 6 players from last years minor team, will gain plenty of this experience and learning points from this game and as they head into the championship.
Galway started the brightest when Katie Gilchrist found Laura Kelly and Kelly got Galway’s opening score in the opening minute. Cork nearly had a goal chance in the 2nd minute but Rachael O’Shea’s shot went the wrong side of the Galway post. Gilchrist added to Galway’s tally in the 4th minute. A quick free from Michelle Murphy found the Cork captain, Fiona Neville and Neville got Cork’s first score on the 5th minute of the game. Laura Loughnane and Gilchrist, through a free, responded with points for Galway to leave it 0-4 to 0-1 after 7 minutes. Murphy added another point from play on the 8th minute while Joanne Casey added two frees for Cork to leave the teams level heading up to the midway point of the half.
Tara Lawrence found Loughnane with a great clearance and Loughnane put Galway in front again in the 15th minute but Murphy responded quickly to leave the teams level for the second time in the game. On the 18th minute, Cork got their major of the game when Siobhan Hutchinson ran through the heart of the Galway defence, and she blasted the ball past Fiona Ryan in the Galway net. Murphy and Casey through a free extended the Cork lead in the 25th and 27th minutes while Gilchrist got Galway’s first score in 13 minutes when she slotted over a free to leave it Cork 1-7 Galway 0-6 at half time.
Cork started the second half, just like the finished the first. Casey pointed two frees for the Leesiders in the opening 2 minutes. Gilchrist had a missed goal chance on the 4th minute for Galway but Laura Kelly responded with a fantastic point from the sideline for Galway on the 7th minute. Casey, who gave an exhibition of free taking, slotted over a free from 65 meters out while a fantastic sideline cut by Rachel Carty found the oncoming Hutchinson and Hutchinson put the bar to leave it Cork 1-11 Galway 0-7 after 11 minutes in the second half. Kelly (2) and Gilchrist, through a free, tried to reduce the deficit for Galway. Casey responded with two more frees for Cork near the end of the game to leave it Cork 1-13 Galway 0-10.
The youthful Galway team will be disappointed with the result but they will have loads to work on in the training ground ahead of their opening championship game on the weekend of the 21st/22nd of May. Tara Lawerance, Tegan Canning, Jennifer Hughes, Laura Loughnane, Laura Kelly and Katie Gilchrist tried hard while for Cork, Kelly Falvey, Aoife O’Callaghan Rachel Carty, Joanne Casey, Siobhan Hutchinson and Michelle Murphy all preformed well.
