Gort Community School came up just short in their quest for All Ireland Colleges victory on Saturday when a last minute goal for Coláiste Abhainn Rí Callan sealed a two point victory for the Kilkenny side in the Allianz Ireland Senior C Post Primary Schools final.

Gort Community School got off to a fantastic start. Points from Helena Tarpey and a well taken score under pressure for Aisling Dolphin left them 0-2 to 0-0 ahead after 4 minutes. Player of the game Ciara O’Shea opened her sides accounts on the 9 th minute through a free while Chloe O’Donovan levelled the sides on the 11 th minute with a close range point. Katie Flaherty and Aisling O’Sullivan exchanged scores on 11th and 13th minutes. Gort got their first major of the game on the 13th minute when a handpass from Tarpey found Abbie Massy and Massy made no mistake in sticking the ball in the back of the Coláiste Abhainn Rí net. Gort continued to extend their lead with a Dolphin free, a point from Tarpey then on the 21 st minute when a handpass from Flaherty found the oncoming Alisha Quinn and Quinn blasted the ball past Jenny Saunders in the Coláiste Abhainn Rí net to leave them 2-5 to 0-3 ahead. Callan almost got in for a goal on the 28th minute but the ball was cleared off the line by the Gort defence. Dolphin added another free to Gort’s tally on the 29th minute while O’Shea added two frees for Callan to leave Gort 2-6 to 0-5 ahead, heading into the break.

Scores were hard to come by for Gort Community School in the second half as they only managed to score one point throughout the half. O’Shea added 2 more frees for Coláiste Abhainn Rí between the 2nd and 11th minutes of the half. Then an O’Shea 45m free was dropped into the square and ended up in the back of the net for Callan. Ava Brett, under pressure, got her first score of the game to bring them within one of Gort with 18 minutes gone on the clock. Dolphin got Gort’s only score of the half with a well taken point from play on the 20th minute. O’ Shea added another free to her tally on 24th minute to leave one between the sides again. Then a long range free from O’Shea was lobbed into the square again and broke Gort hearts as it ended up in the back of the next to secure a two point victory for Coláiste Abhainn Rí as it finished Coláiste Abhainn Rí 2-9 Gort Community School 2-7.

MATCH REPORT (by Daragh O’Conchuir)

ST Declan’s Kilmacthomas were the first ever winners when this All-Ireland competition was introduced 12 years ago. On Sunday in Johnstown they became the first school to collect the trophy on two occasions when Waterford senior star Niamh Rockett guided them to a 1-10 to 2-4 victory over Ardscoil Mhuire Ballinasloe.

The damage was really done in the opening minute when Kaci Brazil hit the net for St Declan’s in their first attack. Bevin Bowden (45) and Hannah McGrath quickly added points before Ballinasloe could get a foothold in the game. The Connacht champions defended well for the next 12 minutes and eventually Leah Campbell got the score-board moving with a point from a free. However Bowden added three more points (two frees) before Sophie Flynn raised Ardscoil Mhuire’s hopes with a goal a minute from the break, leaving the Waterford side 1-5 to 1-1 ahead.

When Flynn’s high ball went all the way to the Kilmacthomas net four minutes into the second half, it was very much game on at 2-2 to 1-6. However sub Aisling Bonnar hit back with a point and over the next 15 minutes Ava Fitzpatrick (two) and Kaci Brazil stretched their side’s lead to four. Although Leah Campbell’s free in the 51st minute left just one score between them, St Declan’s defence held out to lift the title.

SCORERS: Ardscoil Mhuire S Flynn (2-0), L Campbell (0-4, 3 frees).
