MATCH REPORT
By Sarah Gaughran Galway PRO.
Galway booked their place in the Littlewoods Ireland Division 1 Camogie League Semi final after a convincing victory over Limerick in Kilmallock on Saturday. Galway who have now topped their group with two wins from two received a bye into the Semi-Finals which will take place on the weekend of the 12th/13th of June.
Limerick got the opening score of the game through a Caoimhe Costello free inside the opening minute. Carrie Dolan added a point for Galway through a free while Catherine Finnerty added one from play to leave Galway 0-2 to 0-1 ahead after 5 minutes. Costello added another free on the 7th minute for Limerick, just before Ailish O’Reilly found the net for Galway on the 8th minute. Costello responded with two more frees for limerick before the water break to leave it Galway 1-2 Limerick 0-4. Upon the resumption, Siobhán McGrath struck a fantastic goal for Galway, while 2 minutes later, her sister Orlaith McGrath landed a point for Galway. Áine Cunningham responded with a point for Limerick while Siobhán McGrath and Costello swapped points at the end of the half to leave it Galway 2-4 Limerick 0-6 at half time.
Galway blitzed Limerick in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Dolan, O’Reilly, Siobhán McGrath and Orlaith McGrath all added points to Galway’s tally while Niamh Kilkenny added another major for Galway to leave Galway 3-8 to 0-6 points ahead at the 50-minute mark. Costello, Limerick’s top scorer on the day, added another point on the 51st minute for Limerick, their only score of the 2nd half. Galway finished strong with 5 unanswered points for a finish from Siobhán McGrath (2), Sarah Spellman and substitutes Noreen Coen and Rebecca Hennelly to leave it Galway 3-13 Limerick 0-7.
Galway will look forward to the break this weekend and will use this time to prepare for the Semi-Final. Galway will be happy with their overall performance as they took their goal chances and they conceded very few points from play. They will need to work on their discipline and ensure they do not concede as many scoreable frees the next day. In defence, Dervla Higgins, Shauna Healy and Siobhán Gardiner preformed well, while upfront Siobhán McGrath, Ailish O’Reilly, Orlaith McGrath and Niamh Kilkenny were clinical upfront. They will be looking forward to getting some more competitive game time under their belts ahead of the championship.
