Galway v Tipperary: Liberty Insurance All Ireland Camogie Championship.
Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Cork.
Galway 1-11 Tipperary 0-08.
Galway book a place in the All Ireland Camogie final with a six point victory over Tipperary in a foggy Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday.
Galway’s Niamh Hanniffy registered the opening score with a point from play which was then answered with a point by Roisin Howard to gain Tipperary’s first score. Cait Devane then converted a free from a foul on Karen Kennedy in front of the goals. A missed free from Carrie Dolan was quickly reconciled moments later when she rattled the back of the net after receiving a clever handpass from Orlaith McGrath. This crucial score put Galway ahead going into the first water break.
The second quarter started with a point from play by Ailish O’Reilly on her right side however Tipperary’s Devane was then able to answer with her own point from play. Howard got a chance on goal in the 20th minute but was denied by Sarah Healy. The ball was then returned up to the Galway forwards but a shot from O’Reilly hit off the post and went wide. Devane then went on to convert a free for Tipperary but a free fired over by Dolan put Galway two points ahead. A well worked ball from Aoife Donohue to O’Reilly set up runner Niamh Kilkenny for another excellent point for Galway. Shortly after Rebecca Hennally added to Galway’s tallies with a point from play. Sarah Fryday had a chance to reduce Galway’s lead but was held back by Heather Cooney which resulted in a pointed free by Devane. Galway then got another goal chance just before the break but a O’Reilly shot was saved by Tipp goalie Aine Slattery and Dolan was able to collect the ball and fire it over for a point to extend Galway’s lead at half time 1-6 to Tipperary’s 0-5.
Galway started the second half stronger with a point from play by McGrath after collecting a great sideline from Hennelly followed by a converted 45’ by Dolan. Sarah Dervan passed a well worked ball to Emma Helebert which was passed onto McGrath who struck her second point in the game. A goal opportunity for Tipperary’s Niamh Tracy was shut down by the Galway defense but the recycled ball resulted in a point for Fryday. Devane then scored another free leaving Tipperary five points within Galway. Just before the second water break Galway won a penalty after substitute Siobhan McGrath was fouled when bearing down on goal however the penalty taken by Sarah Healy was superbly saved by Slattery.
The final quarter saw another goal chance by Siobhan McGrath but the shot was deflected out over the endline by Slattery and McGrath converted the 45’. A pass from Siobhan Gardiner to Siobhan McGrath created another scoring chance for Galway but McGrath was stopped by Juileanne Burke which resulted in McGrath winning a second penalty that she fired over the bar herself. Devane got the final score of the match after being fouled by Galway’s Shauna Healy but it wasn’t to be for Tipperary and Galway won on the final time score, Galway 1-11 Tipperary 0-8.
Galway now go on to defend the All Ireland title where they will meet opponents Kilkenny in the All Ireland Final on the 12th of December in Croke Park. Galway’s captain Sarah Dervan was awarded player of the match after having a brilliant game minding the defense and clearing all ball that came her way. Sarah and her teammates now have an All Ireland Final to prepare for and will be hoping for the O’Duffy cup as an early Christmas present this year. In their way is a strong Kilkenny side that Galway will have to overcome to win the O’Duffy for the second year in a row!
