Match Report

By Sarah Gaughran, Galway Camogie PRO
A strong second half showing from Kilkenny helped them on their way to victory over Galway in the Glen Dimplex All Ireland Intermediate Championship. While it was Galway’s opening game, Kilkenny were out in action against Cork in the championship and had a lot more competitive game time in them in comparison to Galway heading into the game.

It was Kilkenny that started the game the brightest with points from Emma Manogue and Sarah Barcoe. Katie Mannion replied with Galway’s opening score on the 4 th minute but Afton Grace who was very accurate from frees throughout the day, replied with a free for Kilkenny on the 7th minute to leave two between the sides. Two quick fire points for Galway on the 9th and 10th minutes through Mairead Dillion and Mannion brought the sides level for the first time in the game. Kilkenny responded well with points from Barcoe, Laura Greene and a free from Grace to leave Kilkenny in the driving seat with 12 minutes left in the half. Chloe Broderick through a free and Niamh Phelan exchanged scores on the 22nd and 23rd minutes but it was Galway who finished the strongest with a point from minor player Aoibheann Barry and another Broderick free to leave Kilkenny a point in front heading into the half time break.

Galway had a great start to the second half with points from Rachel Hughes and Sorcha McGinley to give Galway the lead for the first time in the game. Grace and Manogue replied with a free and a point for Kilkenny to restore their advantage but Barry, who was having a great game for Galway for her first appearance with the Intermediate squad, replied with a point for Galway to leave the sides level after 40 minutes. It was the following 10 minutes that really helped in sealing the victory for Kilkenny scoring six points without reply. Greene, Grace, Barcoe, Aoife Cantwell and Manogue through a free and from play all helped in extending. Broderick ended Kilkenny’s scoring spree when she got her third point of the day through a free. Grace through a free and Ellen Gunner from play extended Kilkenny’s lead even further while Broderick had the last say on the day when she slotted over a free deep into injury time to leave it Kilkenny 0-19 Galway 0-11.

Galway will be disappointed to have faded away in the final 20 minutes after putting up a strong performance up until then. Kilkenny are a well-seasoned side while Galway are building again with some girls lining out in their first competitive championship match for Galway at Intermediate level. There are positives with some great performances from Reitseal Kelly, Chloe Broderick, Aoibheann Barry and Katie Mannion, while for Kilkenny, Niamh Phelan, Laura Greene, Sarah Barcoe, Emma Manogue and Afton Grace were some of their top performers. Galway will have to regroup this week before they take on Dublin in two weeks’ time in Dublin.
