Summary of Senior A, Senior B, Intermediate & Junior A Quarter Finals: Oct 5/6

The semi finalists for the Windows and Rooflights Senior A and B Championships, the Duanes Hardware Intermediate Championship and the C2 Security Junior A Championships have been decided after an exciting weekend of Camogie. In the Senior A Championship, Sarsfields will take on Athenry while Oranmore Maree will face St Thomas. Meanwhile in Senior B Salthill Knocknacarra will face Shamrocks while Clarinbridge will play Castlegar. In the Intermediate championship Pearses will face off against Ahascragh Caltra while Killimor will take on St Colmans. Finally, in the Junior A Championship, Sarsfields will take on Mayo side Tooreen while Portumna take on Kilconieron.

Senior A Championship
Oranmore Maree 0-14 Mullagh 0-9
A late venue change at the 11th hour to Clan na nGael GAA grounds was required to ensure the first of the quarter finals was played on Friday night. Both teams had to make the trip across the Shannon in a bid to make the semi finals. Rachel Monaghan got Mullagh into a two point lead through two frees in the 1st minute. Ailish O’Reilly, Oranmore Maree’s top scorer followed up with 0-5 points, 0-4 through frees, to give them a three point lead by the midway point of the half. Monaghan, through a free, got Mullagh’s first score in 17 minutes to bring the deficit back to two. But Grace Tarpey and O’Reilly through a free followed up with two more to extend their lead further. It was Mullagh who had the final say of the half however through a Tegan Canning point and a Monaghan Free to leave it Oranmore Maree 0-7 Mullagh 0-5 at the half time break. O’Reilly, through a free, and Rachael Hanniffy left four between the sides again, four minutes into the second half. Monaghan pointed two frees, either side of an O’Reilly free. O’Reilly kicked on again with four points in ten minutes, one through a free. Mullagh had the final say of the game with points from Canning and Aoife Connaughton but it wasn’t enough as Oranmore Maree ran out five point victors on the day.

Athenry 0-16 Ardrahan 1-10 AET
Extra time was required to separate Athenry and Ardrahan in a wet and blustery Clarinbridge on Saturday afternoon. It was Athenry who started the brightest with the aid of a stiff breeze. 0-4 Sabina Rabbitte points, one through a free, and one from wing back Dervla Higgins saw Athenry go into a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 0-13 minutes. Rebecca Gardiner got Ardrahan off the mark by the 15th minute with a point from play but Jessica Gill and Higgins followed up with two more points to extend Athenry’s lead even further. Kate Deverux got her first free of the day on the 27th minute but it was Athenry who had the final say of the half with a point from Noreen Coen as they went in 0-8 to 0-2 in front at the break. Ardrahan came out of the blocks strongly in the second half as they used the elements to their advantage and shot 0-5 points without reply. 0-3 from Deverux, one through a free, and one each from Gardiner and Alisha Quinn left one between the sides with 10 minutes left on the clock. Substitute Katie O’Dwyer and Rabbitte followed up with two more points for Athenry. Ardrahan got in for a goal just before added time. A long ball in was batted out by Freeney in the Athenry net and into the path of Quinn who batted it back into the net. Gill did put Athenry into the lead, one minute from time but Deverux followed up with a late free to send the game to extra time. Scores were hard to come by in extra time as both teams battled hard in the blustery elements. Deverux pointed another free three minutes into the second half. But Coen and Rabbitte followed up with two points to give Athenry a slim advantage heading into the second period of extra time. Gardiner brought the sides level again in the first minute of the second half. Athenry however, who had the assistance of the breeze in the second period of extra time, finished the strongest with a Rabbitte free and points from O’Dwyer and Coen as Athenry ran out three point victors on the day.

Senior B Championship
Castlegar 4-16 Kinvara 1-8
Castlegar were comfortable winners over Kinvara on Sunday in Kilbeacanty. Castlegar shot into a five point lead after three minutes with points from Chloe Broderick and Caitriona Lee and a goal from Broderick. Ella Bergin opened Kinvara’s accounts a minute later with a free but Caoimhe Callaghan followed up with Castlegar’s second major of the day a minute after that. Broderick through a free and Aoibheann Barry swapped scores by the 15th minute but Castlegar kicked on even more with three more Broderick points, two from frees, a point from Lee and a goal from Elaine Murphy to give them a 3-7 to 0-2 lead after 25 minutes. Barry and Broderick swapped frees before the end of the half as Castlegar went in 14 points in front at the break. Castlegar started the second half the brightest with points from Broderick and Louise Mahoney. Barry got a lifeline for Kinvara on the 37th minute when she found the back of the net. But Castlegar responded well with points from Mahoney and Lee either side of a free from Bergin. Broderick followed up with a point on the midway point of the half while Ailbhe Conneely followed up with a goal thirsty seconds later to ensure that Castlegar were going to get the victory. Bergin got another free on the 47th minute but Elisha Broderick followed up with two points to extend their lead even further. Ellen Bermingham and Elisha Broderick swapped scores before the end of normal time while Barry and Bergin through a free followed for Kinvara but it wasn’t enough as Castlegar ran out 4-16 to 1-8 winners on the day.

Shamrocks 5-9 Craughwell 0-10
As the old saying goes, goals win games, and five goals were critical to Shamrocks victory over Craughwell under lights in Ballygar on Saturday evening. It was Shamrocks who got off to a great start with 0-4 through Leah O’Halloran, 0-2 from frees, 0-1 through Niamh McInerny and a goal from Lisa Callanan as they went into 1-5 to 0-0 lead by the 17th minute. Vivian Blaine got Craughwell off the mark on the 22nd minute but Katie Donohue followed up a minute later with Shamrocks second major of the day. Blaine did slot over another free on the 30th minute as Shamrocks went in 2-5 to 0-2 in front at the break. Blaine started to claw the lead back for Craughwell as she pointed 0-4 frees by the 44th minute of the second half. O’Halloran got Shamrocks first score in 17 minutes while Donohue hit back with her second major of the day a minute later to extend their lead even further. Blaine responded with two more frees for Craughwell by the 54th minute. Shamrocks got another purple patch with points from Emily Lawless and O’Halloran while Donohue got her hat-trick, to secure the victory for Shamrocks.
Ciara Reidy and Keisha Coleman got Craughwell’s first scores from play on the 63rd and 64th minutes but Shamrocks finished the strongest with a goal from Niamh McInerny and another point from O’Halloran as Shamrocks ran out 5-9 to 0-10 winners on the day.

Intermediate Championship
Pearses 1-11 Liam Mellows 0-8

Pearses have booked their spot in the semi finals of the Duanes Hardware Intermediate Championship after a six point win over Liam Mellows in a wet and windy Ballymacward. It was the visitors who started the brightest with a point from Niamh McPeake and a free from Roisín Hughes. Emma Barrett got Pearses first score on the 11th minute while Hughes responded with another point for Mellows. Barrett and O’Neill brought the sides level by the 17th minute but McPeake restored Mellows lead three minutes later with a point from play. Barrett and Amy Kenny followed up with a point each to give Pearses the lead for the first time by the 23rd minute . Hughes followed with her third of the day on the 29th minute but a point for Kenny and a goal from O’Neill in added time meant Pearses went in four points in front. Scores were hard to come by in the second half. Hughes, through a free, and Barrett swapped scores to leave four between the sides at the midway point of the half. Hughes pointed two more scores, one through a free, either side of a point from Ava Connell to leave three between the sides. But three points from O’Neill, two through frees, ensured Pearses would get the victory on the day.

St Colmans 3-15 Kiltormer 0-8
A strong second half from St Colmans was key to their victory over Kiltormer in a blustery and wet Beagh on Saturday. Caoimhe S Fahey and Sophie Flynn swapped frees in the opening three minutes. Another point from Fahey and a goal from Katie Flaherty saw St Colmans go into a four point lead by the 8th minute. Celine Donnelly pointed for Kiltormer while Chelsea Nolan and Rachel Burke followed up with a point each by the 12th minute. Flynn and Sarah Lyons through a free pointed for Kiltormer either side of a Fahey point. Fahey and Flaherty followed up with two more points for St Colmans but it was the visitors who finished the strongest with points from Alisha Hanlon and two Flynn frees as St Colmans went in 1-7 to 0-7 in front at the break. St Colmans used the elements to their advantage in the second half as they shot 2-6 without reply in the first 19 minutes of the half. 0-2 each from Fahey, one free, and Flaherty, 0-1 each from Burke and Ciara Helebert followed up with a goal each from Ellen Egan and Flaherty, left St Colmans in the driving seat heading into the final few minutes. Flynn got Kiltormer’s first score of the half on the 51st minute with a free but it was St Colmans who finished the strongest with points from Helebert and Fahey as St Colmans ran out 3-15 0-8 winners on the day.
