MATCH REPORT
By Sarah Gaughran Galway PRO.
The Galway Intermediate team’s Littlewoods Ireland Division 2 League campaign came to a halt on Saturday when they lost out to Antrim in the quarter final stages of the competition. Galway, who will have to start planning for the championship, failed to take their goal chances up front, something that may have helped them in sealing a victory against Antrim’s first team. Antrim lined out with a defence that had to change significantly from their win last over Derry, with their soaring star award winner, Chloe Drain missing out due to a broken jaw, while corner back Maria Lynn had to miss the game because of First Communion.
Galway had two missed goal chances and two wides inside the opening 3 minutes. Áine Keane got the scoreboard ticking on the 3rd minute after her missed goal chance was deflected wide and Keane pointed the resulting 45. Amy Boyle added a point a minute later before Ava Lynskey and Nicole O’Neill exchanged scores to leave it Galway 0-2 Antrim 0-2 after 8 minutes. Galway’s teamwork paid off in the 9th minute when Mairead Dillion found Elisha Broadrick, Broadrick returned the pass to Dillion and Dillion put the goal in the back of the Antrim net to give Galway the upper hand after 9 minutes. Cora Kenny added another point for Galway in the 11th minute while Tegan Canning got a deflection to deny Antrim a goal on the 15th minute. O’Neill converted the resulting 45 to leave it Galway 1-3 Antrim 0-3 heading into the water break. Lynskey added a point for Galway after the water break. Kenny missed a goal chance on the 18th minute for Galway, their 3rd missed chance of the half, while Maeve Kelly added a point for Antrim a minute later. A poor clearance by Catrina Graham on the 21st minute found Lynskey and Lynskey passed it off to Kenny to leave Galway 1-5 to 0-4 ahead. Amy Boyle added another point for Antrim on the 25th minute while Kelly, netted a major for Antrim just before the break to leave the sides on level terms heading into the break.
Keane started the scoring for Galway in the second half when she added a point in the first minute. Antrim then went on to hit 4 unanswered points from Nicole O’ Neill through a free and a 45, Roisin McCormick and Maeve Kelly. Galway had a missed goal chance on the 12th minute of the half but Keane put the rebound over the bar. Ciara Dobbin and Keane exchanged points in the 14th and 15th minute of the game while O’ Neill added another point for Antrim just before the second water break to leave it Antrim 1-11 Galway 1-08. Galway tried to snatch a draw in the final quarter. Keane added another 45 for Galway on the 25th minute while Ciara Laverty responded straight away with a point for Antrim. Broadrick added another point for Galway before the end but it wasn’t enough as McCormick added a point for Antrim deep into injury time to leave it Antrim 1-13 Galway 1-10.
Galway will be disappointed that they did not capitalize on their goal chances again this week. The tribeswomen will now have to put all their focus on the Championship and they will have to try and get back to where they were in 2019. It is safe to say that the team grew with confidence every game and they need to take this confidence into the championship to ensure they make it back to Croke Park. On the day Caoimhe Mahon and Racheal Hanniffy performed well for Galway in the backs while up front, Áine Keane and Ava Lynskey played well for the tribeswomen. In defence, Katie McKillop and Maeve Patterson played well while in attack, Nicole O’Neill, Maeve O’Neill and Róisín McCormick were sharp for Antrim.
