The Galway U16 camogie team have secured their place in the Eir U16A semi finals with a game in hand as they continued their undefeated run after a victory over Kilkenny in John Lockes GAA grounds on Sunday. After a strong opening half, Galway had to dig deep in the second half to ensure they got the victory over Kilkenny.

Galway got off to a dream start with Róisín Coleman finding the back of the back of the net by the second minute. Coleman through a free and Amy Kenny pointed for the tribeswomen to give them a five point lead after five minutes. Dearbhla Ryan got Kilkenny off the mark by the 6th minute but Coleman hit back to restore the five point lead through a placed ball 4 minutes later. Ryan and Amy O’Shea, through a free, followed up with points for Kilkenny to leave it 1-3 to 0-3 at the midway point of the half. Galway kicked on with four unanswered points through three frees from Coleman, two 45’s and a point from play for joint captain Sinead Feeney to give Galway a eight point lead by the 23rd minute. O’Shea pointed a free before the break to leave it Galway 1-8 Kilkenny 0-4.

Coleman pointed another free for Galway inside the opening minute of the second half. Scores were hard to come by for the next few minutes but Ryan found the back of the Galway net by the 39th minute to leave five between the sides. O’Shea followed up with a free six minutes later. Kenny got Galway’s first score in 17 minutes when she slotted over a free but Ryan found the back of the Galway net a minute later to leave two between the sides with 12 minutes remaining. The sides went score for score in the final few minutes with Coleman through a free and substitute Kayla Garrett pointing for Galway while O’Shea pointed two points for Kilkenny, one through a free, as Galway ran out 1-12 to 2-5 winners on the day.

Griffin’s side will be happy with their opening half performance but they will be hoping that they can learn lessons from the second half to ensure that they can maintain their unbeaten run in the Championship when they welcome Tipperary to Galway on the 6TH of April in their final group game.
