Match Report
The Galway U16 Camogie team made it back to back wins in the Eir U16 Camogie Championship when they overcame Dublin in a blustery Dangan on Sunday. The Galway side had five changes to the starting team that overcame Cork.
Galway were playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half. Cara Giblin, Eve Kenny and Roisin Coleman, through a free, got Galway off the mark in the opening four minutes. A high ball in by Abigail Ryan wasn’t delt with by the Galway backs and it fell into the path of the Dublin full forward Caelfind Hannigan, who pulled on the ball, landing it in the back of the Galway net. This would be Dublins only score of the half however. Galway went on to shoot eight unanswered points in the remaining 20 minutes of the half. Three Kenny points and five well taken frees from Coleman meant that Galway went in 0-11 to 1-0 ahead at the break.
Scores were far a few between in the second half. Galway had the first few opening shots for scores
but the swirling wind in Dangan meant the balls were dragged wide with the wind. Two Coleman
frees for Galway and frees from Ryan and Mia Slinley were the only scores of the second half.
Galway will be happy with their defence in the second half as they let didn’t let Dublin, who were playing with the aid of a strong breeze, in for many scoring opportunities. Galway are away to Limerick and Kilkenny for their next two games before they return home for their final group game against Tipperary at home on the 6th of April. Manager, Brian Griffin will be happy with the performance in testing conditions in Dangan. He will also be happy to have gotten lots of game time into a lot of players over the last two weeks. They have a rest week next week before making the trip to Limerick on the 9th of March.
