Match Report
The Galway Minor Camogie team got their opening win in the Electric Ireland Minor A Championship on Sunday when they had an eight point victory over Clare in Kenny Park. Galway found it hard to shake off Clare in contest but came good in the final ten minutes to secure the victory.
It was the visitors who started the brightest with a long range free from Shauna Queally, Clare’s only scorer in the contest, in the opening minute. Grace Tarpey replied two minutes later with a free for Galway. Queally and Tarpey swapped frees again to leave the sides level by the 12th minute. Scores were hard to come by in the opening quarter. Galway had created some goal chances but found it hard to get passed the Clare full back line. Emily Lawless did manage to break through the backs on the 19th minute to get Galway’s first major of the day and to also give Galway the lead for the first time in the contest. Queally pointed two more frees either side of a Tarpey free by the 31st minute. It was Galway who had the final say of the half however. Lawless and Emma Barrett teamed up with some great passes as Barrett batted the ball into the back of the net to give Galway a 2-3 to 0-4 lead heading into the break.
Queally brought the deficit back to three by the 35th minute as she slotted over two more frees for the
Banner county. Katie Lawless opened Galway’s accounts for the second half a minute later with a well taken point from play. Galway were really struggling to pick off scores in the second half. Queally pointed her seventh free of the day at the midway point of the half. Barrett did break through for a goal opportunity but credit must go to Neisha O’Neill in the Clare goal as she pulled off a fantastic double save. Galway did start find their scoring range in the final ten minutes. A fantastic effort from substitute Mary Brigid Cosgrove from the sideline and points from Lawless and Kerri O’Driscoll extended Galway’s lead to six. Queally replied with a free but it was Galway who finished the strongest with points from Lawless, substitute Katelyn Walsh and joint captain Mia Rodgers as Galway ran out 2-10 to 0-8 points winners on the day.
Galway will be happy to get a win under their belts having lost out to Limerick in the opening game but Glennon’s charges will know that improvements are needed as they head to Wexford in two weeks time. They will be hoping to start like they finished against Clare as they aim for back to back wins.
