Match Report

The Galway Senior Camogie team made it back to back victories in the Division 1A Very Camogie league on Saturday as they came from behind to to overcome the hosts Waterford by three points in the finish. Waterford brought the game to Galway and like last weekend, Galway had to dig deep in the second half and use their experience to grind out the victory.

The Tribeswomen started the brightest with Galway captain, Carrie Dolan, splitting the posts in the opening minute through a free. Maggie Gostl replied from a tight angle for Waterford with a well taken point from play a minute later. Galway went on a scoring spree with four unanswered points in a five minute period. Sisters Sabina and Olwen Rabbitte, Niamh Niland and Dolan, through a free, gave Galway a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 8 minutes. That however was Galway’s last score for a 17 minute period. Waterford began to get a hold on the game with two Niamh Rocket points, one through a free and points from Mairead O’Brien, Abbie Flynn and 2023 player of the year Beth Carton to give them the lead for the first time in the game by the 22nd minute. Flynn did get through for a goal during this period but her shot was well stopped by the Galway net minder, Sarah Healy. Niamh Mallon and O’Brien swapped scores on the 25th and 26th minutes respectively to leave it 0-7 to 0-6 in favour of Waterford. A minute later Carton got through the Galway defence and laid the ball of to Gostl and Gostl blasted the ball to the back of the Galway net. Dolan replied with a free before the half time break as Waterford headed into the break in front on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-7.

Carton took over the free taking duty for the Deise in the second half and slotted over a free in the opening minute of the second half to give them a four point lead. That would be Waterford’s only score for 32 minutes of the second half. Score were hard to come by but Galway battled hard and stayed picking away at scores throughout the half. Galway got eight unanswered points throughout the half. Five points from Dolan, three through frees and one each from Shauna Healy, Aine Keane and Ciara Hickey helped in getting Galway into a four point lead. Carton did reply with another free on the 33rd minute but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line as Galway ran out 0-15 to 1-9 winners on the day.

Cathal Murray will be pleased with the way his side battled hard during the second half to secure the victory. He will also be happy with the spread of scorers throughout the game too. With two wins from two, their eyes are now set on a home game against Tipperary next weekend. It was also great to see former All Ireland winner, Emma Helebert, taking to the field of play during the second half. Galway will have to reset again for a tough test against Tipperary next weekend in a repeat of the 2024 league final. There has been very little separating the sides in the last few years but Galway will be hoping to keep their winning streak going with a victory.
