Match Report
The Galway Senior camogie team made it back to back wins in the Glen Dimplex All Ireland Senior Camogie Championship when they overcame Derry on Saturday in Owenbeg. Galway dominated the contest throughout and proved that they were far too strong for the Derry outfit.
Niamh Mallon and Aoife Donohue opened the scoring for Galway in the opening 3 minutes. Orlaith Hull, Derry’s only scorer of the first half replied with Derry’s opening score a minute later. But Galway kept the scoreboard ticking with two Carrie Dolan points, one from a free and points from Mallon and Olwen Rabbitte and a goal from Mairead Dillion left Galway 1-6 to 0-1 ahead coming upto the midway point of the half. Hull hit back for Derry with two points either side of a point from Dillion. But it was Galway who finished the half the strongest with points from Mallon (0-4), Donohue (0-1), Sabina Rabbitte (0-1), Dolan (0-1F) and Ailish O’Reilly (0-2) while Donohue and Sabina Rabbitte also raised green flags for Galway leaving Galway in the driving seat on a scoreline of Galway 3-16 Derry 0-3 heading into the half time break.
Mallon slotted over three more points in the opening few minutes of the second half, bringing her tally to 0-9 for the day and extending Galway’s lead to 25 points. Substitute Caoimhe Kelly got Galway’s 4th major of the day on the 10th minute of the half while Galway captain Dolan followed up with two points. Jackie Donnelly hit back with a point for Derry but it wasn’t enough to keep the tribeswomen at bay. Galway emptied their bench with substitute Niamh Niland also getting her name on the score sheet before the end of the game. Cliodhna McElhinny replied for Derry near the end but it wasn’t enough as Galway ran out 4-25 to 0-5 winners on the day.
After two games back to back, the Galway girl’s have a break until the 14th of June when they will have another away trip to Kilkenny to take on the kittens. After a defeat to Waterford over the weekend, Kilkenny will be hurt and determined to topple Galway’s winning streak.
