Match Report
The Galway U16 team shared the spoils with Limerick on Sunday in Duggan Park in their 4th round game in the U16A All Ireland Championship. A win would have been preferable for the Galway girls but they are still in the competition with one game to play in the championship.
It was Galway who started the brightest with two points from full forward Emma Barrett and one from Mary Bridgid Cosgrove in the opening 8 minutes. Limerick however started to get a foothold on the game. Caitlin Ryan got Limerick’s opening score on the 13th minute through a free. Amber O’Sullivan Hunt sent a high ball in a minute later, the ball slipped out of Leah Horan’s hand and into the back of the Galway net. Ryan followed a free 3 minutes later to leave two between the sides. Scores were hard to come by as there was 9 minutes without a score but Katie Murray ended the scoring drought on the 26th minute with a free. Aoibhinn O’Connor finished the half off with a well taken score from play as Limerick went in 1-3 to 0-4 in front at the half time break.
Galway seemed inspired after their half time break and came out scoring the first for points unanswered. Murray through two frees, Barrett and Cosgrove all slotted over points in the opening seven minutes of the half. O’Sullivan Hunt and Smith pointed for Limerick to restore their lead by the 39th minute. Like the first half, scores were hard to come by for the rest of the half with both sides only registering two points each. Barrett pointed on the 40th minute for Galway while Mia Smith put Limerick in front by the 54th but the Galway captain Murray stood up on the 60th minute to bring the sides level as it finished Galway 1-7 Limerick 0-10.
Galway face a tough test next weekend as the head down to the fortress that is the Ragg on Sunday to take on Tipperary. It is a must win fixture for the U16’s to ensure that they book their spot in the knock-out stages of the championship.
