Reigning county senior camogie champions Sarsfields drew first blood ahead of this year’s championship, when they collected the 2024 Division 1 league title following a commanding victory over Ardrahan in the decider at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, last week. Although both sides were without their senior and intermediate inter-county players, Sarsfields coped better, and led 1-7 to 0-3 by the change of ends, with Rachel Murray netting the goal on the stroke of half-time. That goal put a whole different complexion on the game, as Ardrahan, to their credit, had been competitive up to this point. Indeed, Mike Lynskey’s outfit only trailed by a point approaching the break, but an unanswered 1-3 from Sarsfields late on ensured they were now in control.
Both sides made changes at the interval, with former Galway captain Shauna Healy returning to action. Initially, it roused Ardrahan – Leanne Helebert and Kate Devereux (free) registering points in the opening minutes of the second period. However, Sarsfields were soon back into the groove again, striking 1-5 without reply. The goal arrived on 47 minutes, when a Niamh McGrath long-range free ricocheted off an Ardrahan hand and spilled over the goal line. McGrath looked sharp throughout and duly finished with 1-9, including three from play. Her sisters Laoise and Ciara also chipped in with a point apiece, while the lively Cora Kenny tallied an impressive four points from play. At the other end of the field, the Sarsfields defence was ably led by Maria Cooney, who was a commanding presence in the centre-half back position throughout. As for Ardrahan, they never really recovered after conceding the 1-3 before the interval while the concession of a plethora of cheap frees – many won by Sarsfields’ Sarah Spellman – in the third quarter also deprived them of momentum.
Late on, midfielder Rebecca Gardiner, who had a superb first half, landed a neat point before Kate Devereux netted a consolation goal on 58 minutes. It was never going to be enough, though. Much for the Ardrahan management to ponder on, but the return of Shauna Healy will undoubtedly give the set-up a major boost ahead of championship. Sarsfields, meanwhile, are looking in fine fettle, especially with Niamh McGrath, who missed last year’s All-Ireland senior club final defeat to Dicksboro, leading their attack once more. It’s hard to look beyond them claiming a sixth successive championship crown – their eighth in nine years – this Autumn.
