In the Windows and Rooflights LTD Senior A Championship Sarsfields overcame Craughwell comfortably on Friday in testing conditions for the opening round of the championship. It was all to play for at half time with five between the sides but goals from Shannon Corcoran (2), Siobhán McGrath and Cliona Cahalan proved decisive as Sarsfields ran out 4-15 to 0-7 winners. Oranmore Maree showed their intent in their opening game against Davitts. Chloe Farragher opened the scoring for Davitts. But on the 6th minute, Niamh Hanniffy raised her first green flag of the day when she broke through to get her sides opening score. Rachael Hanniffy followed up with two from play for Oranmore Maree to give them a nice lead. Allanah Kenny and Catherine Hanley replied with two points to reduce the deficit to two but Rebecca Grealish, who replaced Ailish O’Reilly at the beginning of the game, hit the back of the Davitts net to increase their lead to five. Catherine Hanley replied with a free two minutes later before Eimear O’Donovan and Niamh Hanniffy raised white flags to extend their lead to six, 8 minutes from the end of the half. Ciara Hickey and Aisling Finn exchanged scores before Hanley replied with a free on the 30 th minute to leave it Oranmore Maree 2-5. Davitts 0-6 heading into the half time break.
O’Donovan and Hanley exchanged scores at the beginning of the second half. O’Donovan got her third point of the day on the 39th minute. A minute later, a well worked team score that involved Christina Brennan, Róisín Black and Sacra Mannion, ended up in the hands of Niamh Hanniffy and she raised her second green flag of the day to extend their lead further. Hickey replied with a point to try and settle her side, but Oranmore kicked into gear scoring 1-7 without reply in a nine minute spell. Points from Niamh Hanniffy (5), Clodagh Power (2) and a goal from O’Donovan. Hanley ended the scoring spree on the 56th minute, through a free and a point from play but it was Oranmore who had the final say on the game with a point from Finn and a third goal from Niamh Hanniffy to leave it Oranmore Maree 5-14 Davitts 0-10.
It was a much closer affair between Mullagh and Ardrahan. Ava Lynskey, Alisha Quinn and Dearbhaile Walsh opened the scoring for Ardrahan with a point each inside the opening five minutes. Rachel Monaghan, who was Mullagh’s top scorer on the day, got her sides opening score on the 6th minute. Helena Tarpey and Caoimhe Lynskey through two frees added to Ardrahan’s tally to leave five between the sides with 9 minutes remaining. Aoife Connaughton got her sides second score of the day on the 24th minute but directly after the score, Helena Tarpey replied with her sides only major of the day. It looked like Ardrahan were really in the driving seat. Amy King responded straight away with a point for Mullagh. Walsh and Caoimhe Lynskey, through a free, replied with points. But, on the 31st minute, Mullagh got a much-needed lift before heading into break when Monaghan hit the net for her sides only goal of the game. Caoimhe Lynskey had the final say of the half with a point from a free to leave it 1-9 to 1-3 heading into the break.
Caoimhe Lynskey started the half just like she finished the first with a point from play. Connaughton and King replied with two quick fire points for Mullagh on the 31st minute. Caoimhe Lynskey got her second point of the half of the half on the 33rd minute while Monaghan through a free and Ava Lynskey from play exchanged points on the 36th minute. Monaghan got her third point of the day through a free on the 40th minute. But it looked like Ardrahan were pushing ahead again with points from Ava Lynskey, Galway Senior Camogie Captain Shauna Healy and a free from Caoimhe Lynskey. It was Mullagh who finished the strongest scoring five points without reply through Monaghan, one from play and one through a free, King, Pearl Finnerty and Tegan Canning but it was too little to late as Ardrahan ran out 1-15 to 1-12 winners.
In the Windows and Rooflights LTD Senior B Championship, a strong second half performance from
Clarinbridge saw them overcome Eyrecourt in Tynagh on Sunday. A second half goal from Niamh Niland helped Clarinbridge as they ran out 1-20 to 0-10 victors on the day. It was a much closer affair in the first game in Tynagh in a repeat of the 2021 Intermediate final between Salthill Knocknacarra and Kinvara. It was the 2021 Intermediate champions, Kinvara, who started the brightest with points from Laura Gately, Katie Ann Walsh, Chloe Loughnane and a free from minor star Aoibheann Barry to give them a four-point lead in the opening ten minutes. Laura Kelly got Salthill Knocknacarra off the mark on the 13th minute while 6 minutes later, Aoibhe Joyce brought the sides level with their first goal of the day. Barry and Aoife Kelly exchanged frees while Ines Morrison got her sides second major of the day on the 26th minute to give Salthill Knocknacarra the lead for the first time in the game. Barry reduced the deficit to one with a point from play and another from a free but it was Salthill Knocknacarra who had the final say of the half with a goal from Sarah Jackson on the 31st minute to leave them four points to the good, heading into the half time break.
Barry opened the scoring in the second half with a point inside the opening minute. Laura Kelly replied with two to extend Salthill Knocknacarra’s lead even further. Barry, who was very accurate throughout the contest, replied with two frees and a point from play for Kinvara between the 38th and 44nd minutes. Aoife Kelly tried to settle the ship for Salthill Knocknacarra with her second point of the day. Barry, Kinvara’s sole scorer in the second half, hit four more points during a four minute spell, two from play and two from frees, to give Kinvara the lead but a free from Aoife Kelly on the 54th minute and a point from Camille Keane on the 60th minute meant Salthill Knocknacarra registered their first victory at senior level as it finished Salthill Knocknacarra 3-7 Kinvara 0-15.
A goal from St Thomas’ joint captain Lorraine Coen proved the difference between St Thomas’ and Castlegar in Kilbeacanty on Sunday. The 2022 Intermediate champions, Castlegar, who started the brightest with Galway Intermediate star Chloe Broderick shooting three points, two through frees, and her twin sister Elisha Broderick shooting one to give Castlegar a four-point lead with six minutes gone on the clock. Coen brought the sides level, scoring four points, three through frees between the 8th and 14th minutes. Chloe Broderick got her 4th point of the day through a free at the midway point of the half. Coen responded with two of her own frees to give St Thomas the lead for the first time in the game on the 18th minute. Two Chloe Broderick frees and a point from play through Róisín Crowe helped in relinquishing Castlegar’s lead. Coen and Chloe Broderick exchanged frees on the 28th and 30th minutes while Abbie Massey had the final say of the half with a point from play to leave one between the sides heading into the halftime break.
Massey continued the way she finished the first half with a point on the 34th minute. Chloe Broderick
and Coen swapped frees on the 36th and 39th minutes. A brace of Chloe Broderick points, two from a free and one from play saw Castlegar take a three-point lead with 16 minutes left on the clock. But then 1-4 without reply from St Thomas in a seven-minute period meant the game had turned. Points from Massey, one from play and one from a free, Orla Mullins, Coen and the all-important goal from Coen on the 49th left St Thomas four points to the good. Two more Broderick frees and a point from Emma Murphy helped in reducing the deficit to one for Castlegar with two minutes of normal time remaining. Points from Coen, from play and through a free and a free from Massey meant that their lead had been increased to four heading into the final moments. Chloe Broderick hit two points through a free and one from play near the end of the game, but it was Massey through a free who had the final say of the game as St Thomas’ ran out three-point victors on a scoreline of St Thomas 1-18 Castlegar 0-18.
Athenry overcame Carnmore in the Windows and Rooflights Senior A Championship Round 1 rescheduled fixture on Wednesday (August 30th) in Tuam Stadium. It was another historic day for Galway Club Camogie as it was the first game to be held in Tuam Stadium. Carnmore really asked questions of Athenry in the opening half but Athenry’s experience was to the fore in the second half as they pulled away. It was Athenry who started the brightest with two Sabina Rabbitte frees and points from play
through Eimear Keane and the Galway U16 vice-captain, Kerri O’Driscoll to leave them 0-4 to 0-0 with 14 minutes gone on the clock. Alannah Fahy opened Carnmore’s accounts on the 16th minute. 2022 Soaring Star, Jennifer Hughes, took on the Athenry defence and blasted the ball to the back of the net a minute later to bring the sides level. Jennifer Hughes with one from play and one through a free and minor star Fahy through brought Carnmore into the lead. Noreen Coen followed up with points for Athenry on the 26th and 28th minutes while Rabbitte also followed up with one from play to bring the sides level but a Hughes free on the 30th minute left Carnmore one point ahead heading into the half time break. Athenry came out in the second half just like the way they applied themselves to the second half against Davitts as they scored 12 points without reply. Four points from Rabbitte, two through frees, two from Coen, and one each for Kayla Madden, Keane, O’Driscoll, Therese Donohue, Grace Cahill and Kate Screene left Athenry eleven points ahead with 6 minutes of normal time remaining. Fahy got Carnmore’s first score of the half on the 55th minute through a free. Rabbitte replied with a point from play two minutes later, but it was Fahy who has the final say of the game when she struck over another free for Carnmore on the 60th minute to leave it Athenry 0-20 Carnmore 1-7.
