The Galway Intermediate team concluded their Very national camogie league campaign on Saturday in Ballinderreen where they were defeated by Tipperary. The contest ebbed and flowed through and there was very little separating the sides. However, Galway will be disappointed that they failed to win any of their matches throughout the league.
Tipperary started quickly out of the blocks with two Jean Kelly points. Then Mairead Dillion hit the back of the net twice between the 9th and 13th minutes to give Galway a four-point lead. Tipperary hit back hard scoring 4 points on the trot through Aoife McLoughney (2), Ellen Cunneen and Sarah Madden between the 16th and 24th minutes to bring the sides level again. Dillion replied with a point a minute later to restore Galway’s lead. But then on the 27 th minute, Kelly blasted the back of the Galway net to give Tipperary the lead heading into the half time break. Niamh Spellman got her name on the scoresheet with a well taken point just before the half time break to leave it Tipperary 1-6 Galway 2-2.
There was very little scoring from play at the beginning of the second half. Chloe Broderick opened the scoring in the second half with two frees in the 32nd and 36th minutes to bring Galway into the lead again. McLoughney restored Tipperary’s lead with two frees between the 39th and 42nd minutes. Broderick and Madden exchanged scores from placed balls on the 44nd and 45th minutes to leave one between the sides heading into the final quarter. Joint captain Karen Kennedy and McLoughney swapped scores from play on the 47th and 50th minute. Mairead Dillion secured her hat-trick on the 52nd minute when she rattled the back of the Tipperary net again and it looked like Galway may pull away for their first victory of the campaign. Tipperary finished the game the strongest with a free through McLoughney and points from play from McLoughney and Kelly as Tipperary ran out one point winners on a scoreline of Tipperary 1-13 Galway 3-6.
The Galway Intermediate team will now have to switch their attention towards the championship as their league campaign has come to an end. `While they came close again on Saturday, they will need to look at getting more point scorers on board to help them close out their games. There sights are now set on the weekend of the 3 rd and 4 th of June when they will face Kildare at home in their opening game of the Glen Dimplex Intermediate Championship.
