MATCH REPORT

Castlegar were crowned Fr Lawless Cup Champions on Saturday in Castlegar when they overcame St Dominics from Roscommon in a titanic battle. Castlegar who were missing 6 of their starting team from the county final had to come from behind with a strong finish to ensure they secured another title for their side this year.

Niamh Fitzgerald got the dream start for St Dominics when in the opening minute, a long free into the full forward line found Fitzgerald and she turned on Sinead King and blasted the ball into the back of the Castlegar net. Castlegar found it very hard to get the ball past their half forward line in the opening 10 minutes while St Dominics kept threatening up front. Chloe Broderick got their opening score with a well taken point from play on the 10 th minute. This was followed up with a fantastic goal from Galway U16 star Caoimhe Callanan. Callanan, who was being double marked managed to get passed the St Dominics defence and stick the ball in the back of the net to give them the lead for the first time. St Dominics had the perfect response when Niamh Watson got a flick on a high ball into the St Dominics full forward line and the ball ended up in the back of the Castlegar net to give St Dominics the lead back with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Callanan, from play and Broderick, through a free replied with points for Castlegar but goal hungry St Dominics were not finished, and Fitzgerald found the back of the Castlegar net for her 2 nd goal of the half on the 25th minute to leave 3 between the sides. Fitzgerald looked like she was going to have her hat-trick before half time, but credit must go to Eva Concannon in the Castlegar goal as she pulled off a fantastic 1 on 1 save. Fitzgerald added a free to St Dominics tally just before the half time break to leave it St Dominics 3-1 Castlegar 1-3 at the halfway point of the game.

Castlegar came out all guns blazing in the second half and looked like a side that were determined to grind out the victory. Broderick struck her first free of the half on the 31 st minute to reduce the deficit to 3 while Callanan struck her second goal of the half a minute later to leave the sides deadlocked, 2 minutes into the half. Castlegar looked like a side that were going to pull away with the victory, but St Dominics made it very difficult for them. Watson added a point for St Dominics on the 39 th minute but Broderick responded a minute later with a free to bring the sides level again. Fitzgerald, through a free and Broderick from play swapped scores on the 45th minute while Fitzgerald added another free to St Dominics tally to give them the lead with 14 minutes left to play.

Just like the county final a few weeks earlier, it was Castlegar that finished the strongest with 4 unanswered points through Broderick, 2 frees, Callanan and Louise Mahoney to leave it Castlegar 2-10 St Dominics 3-4.

Castlegar will be delighted to have grounded out another victory in another final this year. This trait that they have will stand to them as they head into their AIB All Ireland Intermediate club semi final on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of December when they will take on the winners of the Leinster Intermediate Club Championship. For Castlegar, Eva Concannon, player of the game, Caitríóna Lee, Elisha Broderick, Chloe Broderick and Caoimhe Callanan were some of their standout players while for St Dominics, Michelle Rogers, Aine O’Meara, Caroline Dowling, Niamh Fitzgerald and Niamh Watson performed well. With 3 titles to their name this year, Castlegar will now look to push on as they aim to reclaim the Intermediate All Ireland crown that they won 10 years ago.
