Result: Galway 1-25 Kilkenny 3-21
The Semi Final took place in Abbotstown in Dublin against Kilkenny. Normal time could not separate either side so extra time was required. Galway got off to the perfect start when they were 1-3 to no score up after 9 minutes, Katie Gilchrist coming with the goal in the opening minute. Laura Kelly and Niamh McInerney added scores for Galway before the water break while Kilkenny got off the mark to leave it 1-5 to 0-3 in favour of Galway at the first water break. Kilkenny increased their tempo and put pressure on Galway for the Second Quarter. Amy Clifford added 3 points to Kilkenny’s tally while Asha McHardy raised another white flag for the Kilkenny but Niamh McInerney and Katie Gilchrist added to Galway’s tally to leave it 1-9 to 0-7 points at half time.
Kilkenny grew in confidence in the second half and got the perfect start with a goal through substitute Claire Doheny after four minutes. Katie Gilchrist and Niamh McInerney added to their tallies for Galway and as the game ebbed to a third quarter conclusion, Galway held a six-point lead. But Right on the whistle for the 2nd water break, Sarah Barcoe scored a superb goal for Kilkenny to leave 3 between the teams.
Two minutes into the final quarter, Amy Clifford had the deficit down to a single point for Kilkenny. Kilkenny tried to push on but a lot of their ball kept dropping into the hands of Galway’s spare defender, Ciara Hickey. Katie Gilchrist and Sabina Rabbitte both pointed for Galway near the end and it looked like Galway had their place booked in tbe final but a last minute goal from Sarah Barcoe meant that extra time was required in order to separate the sides.
Two Amy Clifford frees at the beginning of extra time saw Kilkenny take the lead for the first time in the game. But Niamh McInerney and Katie Gilchrist were on target again for the tribeswomen and ensured Galway had the lead 1-23 to 3-16 heading into the second period of extra time. But unfortunately Kilkenny outscored Galway in the final 10 minutes 0-5 to 0-2 to leave it Galway 1-25 (28) to Kilkenny’s 3-21 (30).
The girls gave it everything and they left everything they had on the pitch on a very hot day in Abbotstown. The girls will come back stronger and they will learn a lot from this game.
