Craughwell 1-12
Kinvara 0-15
There was plenty of drama in Gilligan Park, Craughwell, when it took a late penalty save from Craughwell’s Claire Forde and a converted free from Leanne Freaney to secure the home side a draw and the point they required to top Group 1 and advance directly to the semi-finals. Kinvara, who needed a win to earn a play-off for third place in Group 2 and avoid the relegation final, led 0-8 to 0-7 at half-time, with Aoibheann Barry hitting six of those points from frees and Ella Bergin and Ciara Costello accounting for the remainder. For Craughwell’s part, they enjoyed a fruitful opening 20 minutes, with Vivien Blaine (two points and a 45), Freaney (2), Niamh Duffy and Sinead Gaffney putting them 0-7 to 0-4 in front. However, it was Kinvara who finished the half the stronger to take the lead at the break and they continued this impressive showing when extending their advantage further in the third quarter through another plethora of Barry frees and a point from Grace Bergin. Gaffney, Freaney and Blaine kept Craughwell within touching distance with a brace of points before Leanne Freaney pounced for the game’s only goal to tie up the fixture, 1-10 to 0-13, in the final quarter. Barry and Blaine subsequently exchanged frees, before Barry nudged Kinvara ahead with just minutes remaining. The same player had the opportunity to seal the victory when Kinvara were awarded a penalty with two minutes of normal time left, but Forde was equal to the effort, saving her second penalty in as many games. A long range Freaney free tied up the game on the stroke of full-time and, while both sides had opportunities to win it, this thrilling contest finished all square.
