Match Report

Galway got their Electric Ireland Minor A Championship campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Limerick in the Prairie, in a repeat of the 2024 U16A final which Limerick won by a single point. This time, however, it was Galway who came out on top, with a crucial goal from Leah Forde proving the difference in a fiercely contested encounter.

Limerick made the brighter start, registering early points from Anna Rose Benson and Katelyn Ryan inside the opening 12 minutes to move two points ahead. Galway settled into the game and responded through joint captain Emma Barrett and Mary Brigid Cosgrove, whose points brought the sides level by the 21st minute. Ryan restored Limerick’s advantage four minutes later, but Cosgrove replied almost immediately to keep Galway in touch. Ryan had the final say of the half, slotting over her third point to send Limerick into the break leading 0-4 to 0-3.

Galway burst out of the blocks at the start of the second half. Lauren Morgan levelled matters with a point before Leah Forde struck for a vital goal moments later. Cosgrove extended Galway’s advantage to four points when she added her third score of the afternoon three minutes later. Limerick responded strongly, with three further points from the impressive Ryan and another from Benson to close the gap. Cosgrove continued to lead Galway’s charge, adding three more points to help her side hold a two-point advantage entering the closing stages. Ryan reduced the deficit to the minimum in injury time, but late points from Barrett and Cosgrove ensured Galway secured a 1-10 to 0-10 victory in their championship opener.

Galway will be pleased with their resilience in grinding out the result. Next up for the minors is an away trip to Dublin on Sunday, February 15. It promises to be a busy period for several squad members, who are also set to feature for their respective post-primary schools in the All-Ireland Senior Finals next weekend.
