MATCH REPORT

By Sarah Gaughran Galway PRO.
The Galway Intermediate team started their league campaign on Saturday away to Kerry. For this group, it was their first competitive game since they were thrown out of the Intermediate championship last year due to Covid-19. It wasn’t the start they dreamed of but the youthful Galway side can certainly learn from the game.

The sides swapped the opening four scores. AnnMarie Leen opened the scoring for Kerry in the first minute after she deflected the ball over the bar, but Galway responded straight away. Fiona Ryan’s Puck out found Molly Mannion and she laid it off to the on coming Ava Lynskey to leave the sides level terms. Patrice Diggin added a free for Kerry on the 3rd minute while Aine Keane added one for Galway on the 11th. Kerry had a free from the middle of the pitch. Galway were not alert to Kerry’s tactics when Diggin went short with the free to Jackie Horgan and Horgan put the ball over the bar to leave Kerry in front. Just before the water break, Mairead Burke played a ball in front of the Kerry goal and Mairead Dillion came through and finished the ball into the back of the net. This saw Galway lead 1-2 to 0-3 heading into the water break. On the resumption, Niamh Niland and Keane added points to Galway’s tally. Diggin added another free for in the 25th minute and Jessica Fitzell added a point for Kerry before the end of the half to leave the score line Galway 1-4 Kerry 0-5.

Kerry blitzed Galway in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Diggin added a fabulous point from the side-line and a 45 before Kate Lynch added another point from play for Kerry. Diggin added two more scores through a placed ball and from play before Horgan added another sublime point from play to leave it Galway 1-4 Kerry 0-10 points. It was the 14th minute before Galway registered their first point of the half through Keane and this broke Kerry’s scoring streak of 5 points in a row. Diggin added another point for Kerry through a 45 while Ciara Murphy got her name on the scoresheet on the 51st minute with a fantastic point from play at a very tight angle. Keane added Galway’s final scores of the game through two frees while Caoimhe Spillane added a point from play in injury time to leave Kerry 0-14 Galway 1-8.
